Bakri Chhap

Bakri Chhap has been a key player in reviving traditional and climate-positive farming practices in remote Himalayan villages. Backed by wellness chefs and widely promoted, Bakri Chhap, a private limited company, transformed the local ecosystem and became Uttarakhand’s only successful reverse migration model.

Impact Investors' founder, Mani Mahesh Aurora, co-founded Bakri Chhap in 2016. By 2020, under his leadership, Bakri Chhap expanded its operations, working directly with nearly 120 farmers and indirectly with over 500 across 35 remote villages in Uttarakhand.

The portfolio included near-extinct indigenous varieties of cereals, pulses, honey, and millets, predominantly sourced from mid-Himalayan altitudes. With new market linkages, the brand enabled the villagers to transition from mono-cropping to diverse indigenous crops and horticulture, which align better with the region’s landscape, micro-climate, and biodiversity, requiring minimal intervention.
